Have you had someone attempt to scam you? Maybe your credit card was compromised and you had to wait for a new replacement card. Annoying, but at least it wasn’t money out of your pocket. Recently there have been stories of involved, complicated scams that have gradually and relentlessly drained folks of their retirement savings. Scammers can go to great lengths to get your confidence, raise your anxiety, get your sympathy, and lower your guard. The call from the ‘grandchild’ that has been in an accident and needs money is one example. Another is a call from someone claiming to be from your bank or investment company saying your account has been compromised, but they need your ‘help’ (and your password or social security number) to catch the perpetrators.
