I am so excited that I finally convinced my parents to brave the holiday airport traffic and join us for Thanksgiving! I think it was that our young adult children will be home for the week that sealed the deal, but it also helped that my mom was talking about how she dreads cooking the Thanksgiving meal. Not me! I love figuring out what new sides and desserts we’ll have (we always have to have the same turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing), and buying in advance what I need. I spend a day or two leisurely getting things prepped ahead of time, decorating and setting the table, so that all I have to do on Thursday is pop the turkey in the oven, bake the prepped sides, and make the gravy. Oh, and I have leftovers for the next couple of days. It’s a planner’s dream!
Is it always smooth sailing? Of course not. Sometimes there are little problems (forgetting a key ingredient, overcooking a family favorite, or family squabbles), and sometimes there are big problems (health issues, or family and friends you miss).
It’s kind of like planning for retirement: life can throw curve balls, but bit of advance work and planning can help put the odds in your favor.
