I recently re-read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. It is a fantastic and timeless book that has the capacity to permanently impact our lives if we apply the principles.

In the book, Stephen introduces the concept of the Urgent vs. Important matrix pictured below.

Everything we do fits into one of these boxes. We have the tendency to spend our time in quadrants 1 and 3 which forces us to neglect quadrant 2 (where long term important tasks get done).

It hit me…this is why we are not proactive in many areas of life; especially our finances. We must say no to some urgent things to make room for the non-urgent but very important things.
