Sailing around the world: Step 1 – Plan

People that know me well know that I love to sail.  I love to sail on big boats and small boats.  I love to sail on lakes and in the ocean.  I am fascinated by sailing and love to go!  I have a life goal of sailing around the world.   BUT a circumnavigation takes time, planning, and resources.  It’s not enough to just say, one day I would like to do “fill in the blank.”  The world is full of people who have unrealized goals.  The key to achieving BIG life goals is to put a plan into motion.  Once the plan is in motion, it becomes easier and easier to get to your goal…small accomplishments lead to bigger and bigger accomplishments.  You have to identify the small things that you need to do NOW to make the BIG things happen later.

For example, I have 2 small kids (ages 1 and 3) that would make a circumnavigation difficult right now.  Here are some of the steps I need to accomplish to sail around the world 10-15 years from now:

  1. Learn to sail a blue water boat
  2. Save for trip
  3. Build my business and staff so that in 10-15 years, I could feasibly take 1-2 years and work part time from a sailboat

I need to be doing small things NOW that will help me accomplish the 3 steps above in 10-15 years. Later, I’ll share what small steps I’m taking to accomplish my goal.

What BIG goals do you have for your life?  What are the small steps you could take TODAY to reach those goals in 10-15 years?

Here is a cool article about a financial advisor that executed his goal of sailing around the world…check it out here.
